LEARNING TARGET

I can use fraction multiplication to prepare for fraction division.

Build the idea

For a product of fractions, multiply numerators and multiply denominators, then simplify. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first. Multiplying by a fraction less than 1 makes a positive quantity smaller.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Calculate 2 1/4 × 2 1/4. Simplify.

81/16

9/4 × 9/4 = 81/16.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Calculate 1 1/2 × 2 1/4. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

27/8

3/2 × 9/4 = 27/8.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Calculate 2 3/4 × 1 1/4. Simplify.

  2. Calculate 2 1/4 × 2 1/4. Simplify.

  3. Calculate 3 1/4 × 2 1/4. Simplify.

  4. Calculate 2 1/2 × 2 1/2. Simplify.

  5. Calculate 2 1/2 × 2 1/3. Simplify.

  6. Calculate 1 3/4 × 2 1/4. Simplify.

  7. Calculate 2 3/4 × 2 1/3. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  8. Calculate 3 1/4 × 1 1/2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  9. Calculate 3 3/4 × 1 1/2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  10. Calculate 1 3/4 × 2 1/2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.
