Standards 6.RP.A.3d
LEARNING TARGET

I can convert measurements using equivalent ratios.

Build the idea

Write an equality such as 1 foot = 12 inches. Multiply to change larger units into smaller units; divide for the reverse. A conversion factor is a ratio equal to 1, so the amount stays the same.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Convert 7 meters to centimeters. Show the conversion ratio.

700 centimeters

7 × 100 = 700. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Convert 210 minutes to hours. Show the conversion ratio.

7/2 hours

210 ÷ 60 = 7/2; 1 hours = 60 minutes.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Convert 6 meters to centimeters. Show the conversion ratio.

  2. Convert 2 hours to minutes. Show the conversion ratio.

  3. Convert 3 liters to milliliters. Show the conversion ratio.

  4. Convert 3000 milliliters to liters. Show the conversion ratio.

  5. Convert 7 meters to centimeters. Show the conversion ratio.

  6. Convert 800 centimeters to meters. Show the conversion ratio.

  7. Convert 1 meters to centimeters. Show the conversion ratio and explain why the numerical value grows.

  8. Convert 21/2 feet to yards. Show the conversion ratio.

  9. Convert 4 liters to milliliters. Show the conversion ratio and explain why the numerical value grows.

  10. Convert 250 centimeters to meters. Show the conversion ratio.

Answers and reasoning

Reveal the teacher answer key
  1. 600 centimeters

6 × 100 = 600. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  2. 120 minutes

2 × 60 = 120. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  3. 3000 milliliters

3 × 1000 = 3000. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  4. 3 liters

    3000 ÷ 1000 = 3; 1 liters = 1000 milliliters.

  5. 700 centimeters

7 × 100 = 700. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  6. 8 meters

    800 ÷ 100 = 8; 1 meters = 100 centimeters.

  7. 100 centimeters

1 × 100 = 100. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  8. 7/2 yards

    21/2 ÷ 3 = 7/2; 1 yards = 3 feet.

  9. 4000 milliliters

4 × 1000 = 4000. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  10. 5/2 meters

    250 ÷ 100 = 5/2; 1 meters = 100 centimeters.
