LEARNING TARGET

I can locate integers and negative fractions on a number line.

Build the idea

Mark zero and equally spaced whole-number ticks. Partition each interval into equal parts for the denominator. Negative values are left of zero on a horizontal line and below zero on a vertical line.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -5, 0, and 2.

-5 < 0 < 2; unit steps

Negative -5 is left of or below 0; 2 is right of or above 0. Use equal intervals.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -7/3, 0, and 7/3. Name the step size of your scale and explain the placement.

-7/3 < 0 < 7/3; use steps of 1/3

Negative -7/3 is left of or below 0; 7/3 is right of or above 0. Use equal intervals.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -4, 0, and 4.

  2. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -2, 0, and 6.

  3. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -4, 0, and 2.

  4. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -1, 0, and 3/2.

  5. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -1, 0, and 7/5.

  6. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -1/5, 0, and 1/5.

  7. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -7/4, 0, and 3/4. Name the step size of your scale and explain the placement.

  8. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -5/4, 0, and 5/4. Name the step size of your scale and explain the placement.

  9. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -2, 0, and 3/2. Name the step size of your scale and explain the placement.

  10. Draw a horizontal or vertical number line. Plot and label -5/3, 0, and 5/3. Name the step size of your scale and explain the placement.
