LEARNING TARGET

I can plot ordered pairs in all four quadrants.

Build the idea

Start at the origin. Move horizontally by x, then vertically by y. Quadrant signs are I (+,+), II (-,+), III (-,-), IV (+,-). A point on an axis belongs to no quadrant.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Plot P(4, -6) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

Quadrant IV

Move 4 right, then 6 down.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Plot P(4, -3) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant. Then plot Q on the y-axis at the same height and name its coordinates.

Quadrant IV; Q(0, -3)

Move 4 right, then 3 down.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Plot P(-2, -3) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  2. Plot P(7, -5) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  3. Plot P(-7, 4) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  4. Plot P(4, -2) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  5. Plot P(-6, -4) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  6. Plot P(5, 4) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant.

  7. Plot P(-7/2, -3/2) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant. Then plot Q on the y-axis at the same height and name its coordinates.

  8. Plot P(4, -7/2) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant. Then plot Q on the y-axis at the same height and name its coordinates.

  9. Plot P(-5/2, 5/2) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant. Then plot Q on the y-axis at the same height and name its coordinates.

  10. Plot P(7/2, -3) on a coordinate plane and name its quadrant. Then plot Q on the y-axis at the same height and name its coordinates.
