LEARNING TARGET

I can solve x/p = q using multiplication.

Build the idea

Multiply both sides by the nonzero divisor p. Check by dividing the solution by p. Name the unknown quantity and attach its unit in a story problem.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Solve x ÷ 4 = 7/4. Check in the original equation.

x = 7

Multiply by 4 on both sides. Then x = 7; substitution gives 7/4 on each side.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Solve x ÷ 7/2 = 5/7. Check in the original equation.

x = 5/2

Multiply by 7/2 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 5/7 on each side.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Solve x ÷ 8 = 7/8. Check in the original equation.

  2. Solve x ÷ 5 = 6/5. Check in the original equation.

  3. Solve x ÷ 7 = 6/7. Check in the original equation.

  4. Solve x ÷ 8 = 5/16. Check in the original equation.

  5. Solve x ÷ 6 = 1/3. Check in the original equation.

  6. Solve x ÷ 3 = 5/6. Check in the original equation.

  7. Solve x ÷ 2 = 5/4. Check in the original equation.

  8. Solve x ÷ 1 = 3. Check in the original equation.

  9. Solve x ÷ 7/2 = 6/7. Check in the original equation.

  10. Solve x ÷ 7/2 = 4/7. Check in the original equation.

Answers and reasoning

  1. x = 7

Multiply by 8 on both sides. Then x = 7; substitution gives 7/8 on each side.

  2. x = 6

Multiply by 5 on both sides. Then x = 6; substitution gives 6/5 on each side.

  3. x = 6

Multiply by 7 on both sides. Then x = 6; substitution gives 6/7 on each side.

  4. x = 5/2

Multiply by 8 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 5/16 on each side.

  5. x = 2

Multiply by 6 on both sides. Then x = 2; substitution gives 1/3 on each side.

  6. x = 5/2

Multiply by 3 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 5/6 on each side.

  7. x = 5/2

Multiply by 2 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 5/4 on each side.

  8. x = 3

Multiply by 1 on both sides. Then x = 3; substitution gives 3 on each side.

  9. x = 3

Multiply by 7/2 on both sides. Then x = 3; substitution gives 6/7 on each side.

  10. x = 2

Multiply by 7/2 on both sides. Then x = 2; substitution gives 4/7 on each side.
