LEARNING TARGET

I can connect an equation, a table, and a graph.

Build the idea

Choose input values, substitute to find outputs, and write ordered pairs. Label horizontal input and vertical output axes. Plot each pair and interpret a point in the situation.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

For y = 8x, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 6. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

(0, 0); (1, 8); (2, 16); (6, 48)

Substitute each input into y = 8x; x is horizontal and y vertical.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

For y = 6x + 7, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 6. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes. Explain what happens to y each time x increases by 1.

(0, 7); (1, 13); (2, 19); (6, 43); y increases by 6

Substitute each input into y = 6x + 7; x is horizontal and y vertical.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. For y = 2x, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 6. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  2. For y = 4x, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 3. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  3. For y = 7x, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 4. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  4. For y = 3x + 7, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 5. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  5. For y = 7x + 3, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 4. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  6. For y = 4x + 5, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 3. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes.

  7. For y = 7x + 6, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 3. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes. Explain what happens to y each time x increases by 1.

  8. For y = 6x + 5, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 4. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes. Explain what happens to y each time x increases by 1.

  9. For y = 5x + 3, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 2. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes. Explain what happens to y each time x increases by 1.

  10. For y = 5x + 6, make a table for x = 0, 1, 2, 4. Plot the ordered pairs and label both axes. Explain what happens to y each time x increases by 1.
