LEARNING TARGET

I can divide mixed numbers after renaming them as fractions.

Build the idea

Rename a mixed number as (whole × denominator + numerator)/denominator. Keep the dividend, change division to multiplication, and use the reciprocal of the divisor. Simplify and interpret the result.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Calculate 3 3/4 ÷ 1/4. Simplify.

15

15/4 ÷ 1/4 = 15/4 × 4 = 15.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Calculate 1 4/5 ÷ 1 3/8. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

72/55

9/5 ÷ 11/8 = 9/5 × 8/11 = 72/55.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Calculate 2 1/4 ÷ 1/2. Simplify.

  2. Calculate 3 ÷ 1/2. Simplify.

  3. Calculate 3 ÷ 1/4. Simplify.

  4. Calculate 2 3/5 ÷ 2. Simplify.

  5. Calculate 3 ÷ 1 1/4. Simplify.

  6. Calculate 4 2/3 ÷ 2 3/4. Simplify.

  7. Calculate 2 2/3 ÷ 3. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  8. Calculate 2 3/4 ÷ 1 2/3. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  9. Calculate 2 1/2 ÷ 2 5/8. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  10. Calculate 3 1/2 ÷ 2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

Answers and reasoning

  1. 9/2

    9/4 ÷ 1/2 = 9/4 × 2 = 9/2.

  2. 6

    3 ÷ 1/2 = 3 × 2 = 6.

  3. 12

    3 ÷ 1/4 = 3 × 4 = 12.

  4. 13/10

    13/5 ÷ 2 = 13/5 × 1/2 = 13/10.

  5. 12/5

    3 ÷ 5/4 = 3 × 4/5 = 12/5.

  6. 56/33

    14/3 ÷ 11/4 = 14/3 × 4/11 = 56/33.

  7. 8/9

    8/3 ÷ 3 = 8/3 × 1/3 = 8/9.

  8. 33/20

    11/4 ÷ 5/3 = 11/4 × 3/5 = 33/20.

  9. 20/21

    5/2 ÷ 21/8 = 5/2 × 8/21 = 20/21.

  10. 7/4

    7/2 ÷ 2 = 7/2 × 1/2 = 7/4.
