LEARNING TARGET

I can divide mixed numbers after renaming them as fractions.

Build the idea

Rename a mixed number as (whole × denominator + numerator)/denominator. Keep the dividend, change division to multiplication, and use the reciprocal of the divisor. Simplify and interpret the result.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Calculate 1 1/4 ÷ 1/4. Simplify.

5

5/4 ÷ 1/4 = 5/4 × 4 = 5.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Calculate 2 2/3 ÷ 2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

4/3

8/3 ÷ 2 = 8/3 × 1/2 = 4/3.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Calculate 1 3/4 ÷ 1/2. Simplify.

  2. Calculate 2 3/4 ÷ 1/2. Simplify.

  3. Calculate 1 1/4 ÷ 1/4. Simplify.

  4. Calculate 3 3/4 ÷ 3 1/2. Simplify.

  5. Calculate 3 3/4 ÷ 2 1/8. Simplify.

  6. Calculate 1 1/2 ÷ 1 1/2. Simplify.

  7. Calculate 3 1/2 ÷ 4. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  8. Calculate 4 ÷ 2 1/2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  9. Calculate 1 4/5 ÷ 1 1/2. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

  10. Calculate 3 ÷ 2 1/4. Simplify and explain why your answer is reasonable.

Answers and reasoning

  1. 7/2

    7/4 ÷ 1/2 = 7/4 × 2 = 7/2.

  2. 11/2

    11/4 ÷ 1/2 = 11/4 × 2 = 11/2.

  3. 5

    5/4 ÷ 1/4 = 5/4 × 4 = 5.

  4. 15/14

    15/4 ÷ 7/2 = 15/4 × 2/7 = 15/14.

  5. 30/17

    15/4 ÷ 17/8 = 15/4 × 8/17 = 30/17.

  6. 1

    3/2 ÷ 3/2 = 3/2 × 2/3 = 1.

  7. 7/8

    7/2 ÷ 4 = 7/2 × 1/4 = 7/8.

  8. 8/5

    4 ÷ 5/2 = 4 × 2/5 = 8/5.

  9. 6/5

    9/5 ÷ 3/2 = 9/5 × 2/3 = 6/5.

  10. 4/3

    3 ÷ 9/4 = 3 × 4/9 = 4/3.
