LEARNING TARGET

I can use equal-size tape sections to solve a ratio problem.

Build the idea

For a ratio a:b, draw a sections for one quantity and b sections for the other. A total covers a+b sections. Divide the total by a+b to find one section, then multiply by each part count.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 8:6. There are 56 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

32 oaks and 24 pines

14 equal sections total; each section is 56 ÷ 14 = 4.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 6:4. There are 30 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count and the difference between the counts.

18 oaks and 12 pines; difference 6

10 equal sections total; each section is 30 ÷ 10 = 3.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 7:2. There are 18 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  2. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 4:5. There are 45 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  3. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 8:2. There are 60 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  4. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 3:5. There are 24 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  5. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 4:5. There are 27 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  6. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 2:6. There are 32 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count.

  7. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 5:4. There are 45 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count and the difference between the counts.

  8. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 8:6. There are 56 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count and the difference between the counts.

  9. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 5:2. There are 28 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count and the difference between the counts.

  10. The ratio of oak trees to pine trees is 2:7. There are 54 trees altogether. Draw a tape diagram and find each count and the difference between the counts.

Answers and reasoning

  1. 14 oaks and 4 pines

    9 equal sections total; each section is 18 ÷ 9 = 2.

  2. 20 oaks and 25 pines

    9 equal sections total; each section is 45 ÷ 9 = 5.

  3. 48 oaks and 12 pines

    10 equal sections total; each section is 60 ÷ 10 = 6.

  4. 9 oaks and 15 pines

    8 equal sections total; each section is 24 ÷ 8 = 3.

  5. 12 oaks and 15 pines

    9 equal sections total; each section is 27 ÷ 9 = 3.

  6. 8 oaks and 24 pines

    8 equal sections total; each section is 32 ÷ 8 = 4.

  7. 25 oaks and 20 pines; difference 5

    9 equal sections total; each section is 45 ÷ 9 = 5.

  8. 32 oaks and 24 pines; difference 8

    14 equal sections total; each section is 56 ÷ 14 = 4.

  9. 20 oaks and 8 pines; difference 12

    7 equal sections total; each section is 28 ÷ 7 = 4.
