LEARNING TARGET

I can solve x + p = q and check.

Build the idea

Subtract p from both sides to preserve equality. Then substitute the answer into the original equation. The value of the left side must equal the right side.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Solve x + 6 = 9. Check in the original equation.

x = 3

Subtract 6 on both sides. Then x = 3; substitution gives 9 on each side.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Solve x + 4 = 6. Check in the original equation.

x = 2

Subtract 4 on both sides. Then x = 2; substitution gives 6 on each side.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Solve x + 6 = 9. Check in the original equation.

  2. Solve x + 4 = 9. Check in the original equation.

  3. Solve x + 6 = 10. Check in the original equation.

  4. Solve x + 8 = 21/2. Check in the original equation.

  5. Solve x + 7 = 19/2. Check in the original equation.

  6. Solve x + 5 = 15/2. Check in the original equation.

  7. Solve x + 3/2 = 3. Check in the original equation.

  8. Solve x + 1 = 5/2. Check in the original equation.

  9. Solve x + 2 = 7/2. Check in the original equation.

  10. Solve x + 2 = 4. Check in the original equation.

Answers and reasoning

Reveal the teacher answer key
  1. x = 3

Subtract 6 on both sides. Then x = 3; substitution gives 9 on each side.

  2. x = 5

Subtract 4 on both sides. Then x = 5; substitution gives 9 on each side.

  3. x = 4

Subtract 6 on both sides. Then x = 4; substitution gives 10 on each side.

  4. x = 5/2

Subtract 8 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 21/2 on each side.

  5. x = 5/2

Subtract 7 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 19/2 on each side.

  6. x = 5/2

Subtract 5 on both sides. Then x = 5/2; substitution gives 15/2 on each side.

  7. x = 3/2

Subtract 3/2 on both sides. Then x = 3/2; substitution gives 3 on each side.

  8. x = 3/2

Subtract 1 on both sides. Then x = 3/2; substitution gives 5/2 on each side.

  9. x = 3/2

Subtract 2 on both sides. Then x = 3/2; substitution gives 7/2 on each side.

  10. x = 2

Subtract 2 on both sides. Then x = 2; substitution gives 4 on each side.
