LEARNING TARGET

I can solve x - p = q and check.

Build the idea

Add p to both sides to undo subtraction. Check by subtracting p from your answer. Values in this lesson are nonnegative rational numbers.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Solve x - 3 = 3. Check in the original equation.

x = 6

Add 3 on both sides. Then x = 6; substitution gives 3 on each side.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Solve x - 1 = 1/2. Check in the original equation.

x = 3/2

Add 1 on both sides. Then x = 3/2; substitution gives 1/2 on each side.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Solve x - 8 = 3/2. Check in the original equation.

  2. Solve x - 8 = 1. Check in the original equation.

  3. Solve x - 5 = 2. Check in the original equation.

  4. Solve x - 7 = 3. Check in the original equation.

  5. Solve x - 6 = 3. Check in the original equation.

  6. Solve x - 5 = 5/2. Check in the original equation.

  7. Solve x - 1 = 5/2. Check in the original equation.

  8. Solve x - 4 = 1. Check in the original equation.

  9. Solve x - 4 = 5/2. Check in the original equation.

  10. Solve x - 3/2 = 0. Check in the original equation.

Answers and reasoning

Reveal the teacher answer key
  1. x = 19/2

Add 8 on both sides. Then x = 19/2; substitution gives 3/2 on each side.

  2. x = 9

Add 8 on both sides. Then x = 9; substitution gives 1 on each side.

  3. x = 7

Add 5 on both sides. Then x = 7; substitution gives 2 on each side.

  4. x = 10

Add 7 on both sides. Then x = 10; substitution gives 3 on each side.

  5. x = 9

Add 6 on both sides. Then x = 9; substitution gives 3 on each side.

  6. x = 15/2

Add 5 on both sides. Then x = 15/2; substitution gives 5/2 on each side.

  7. x = 7/2

Add 1 on both sides. Then x = 7/2; substitution gives 5/2 on each side.

  8. x = 5

Add 4 on both sides. Then x = 5; substitution gives 1 on each side.

  9. x = 13/2

Add 4 on both sides. Then x = 13/2; substitution gives 5/2 on each side.

  10. x = 3/2

Add 3/2 on both sides. Then x = 3/2; substitution gives 0 on each side.
