LEARNING TARGET

I can convert measurements using equivalent ratios.

Build the idea

Write an equality such as 1 foot = 12 inches. Multiply to change larger units into smaller units; divide for the reverse. A conversion factor is a ratio equal to 1, so the amount stays the same.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

Convert 2 yards to feet. Show the conversion ratio.

6 feet

2 × 3 = 6. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

Convert 12 feet to yards. Show the conversion ratio.

4 yards

12 ÷ 3 = 4; 1 yards = 3 feet.

Your turn

Work in order. Start with the foundations, then build toward explanation and application.

  1. Convert 6 hours to minutes. Show the conversion ratio.

  2. Convert 5 liters to milliliters. Show the conversion ratio.

  3. Convert 8 feet to inches. Show the conversion ratio.

  4. Convert 600 centimeters to meters. Show the conversion ratio.

  5. Convert 2 liters to milliliters. Show the conversion ratio.

  6. Convert 4000 milliliters to liters. Show the conversion ratio.

  7. Convert 5/2 meters to centimeters. Show the conversion ratio and explain why the numerical value grows.

  8. Convert 15/2 feet to yards. Show the conversion ratio.

  9. Convert 2 hours to minutes. Show the conversion ratio and explain why the numerical value grows.

  10. Convert 42 inches to feet. Show the conversion ratio.

Answers and reasoning

Reveal the teacher answer key
  1. 360 minutes

6 × 60 = 360. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  2. 5000 milliliters

5 × 1000 = 5000. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  3. 96 inches

8 × 12 = 96. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  4. 6 meters

    600 ÷ 100 = 6; 1 meters = 100 centimeters.

  5. 2000 milliliters

2 × 1000 = 2000. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  6. 4 liters

    4000 ÷ 1000 = 4; 1 liters = 1000 milliliters.

  7. 250 centimeters

5/2 × 100 = 250. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  8. 5/2 yards

    15/2 ÷ 3 = 5/2; 1 yards = 3 feet.

  9. 120 minutes

2 × 60 = 120. Smaller units require more units for the same amount.

  10. 7/2 feet

    42 ÷ 12 = 7/2; 1 feet = 12 inches.
